HHIPGA Chapter Championship & Assistants Championship

Thanks to all Chapter Professionals who participated in the 2016 Chapter Championship and Assistants Championship.  Day 1 was contested at Sea Pines CC and the final round at Belfair GC.  While mother nature did not cooperate and allow us to finish the first day a special thanks to Ray Bragg and his staff as Sea Pines was in fantastic condition.  Both events became 18 hole competitions and the final round at Belfair GC, West Course, determined our Champion.  Congratulations to our 2016 Chapter Champion, Dylan Thew (pictured below).  Dylan is the PGA Head Golf Professional at Kiawah Island Club – Cassique.   Dylan shot Even Par 72 to edge Matt Bova (Haig Point) by one shot.  David Rogers, PGA Teaching Professional, from The GC @ Indigo Run is our 2016 HHIPGA Chapter Assistants Champion.  David shot 75 to win by one shot over Blake Thomas (Belfair) and Daniel Costenbader (Golden Bear).  A special thanks to our event sponsor, Hargray.

Nazareth Captures CPGA Professional Championship

(Wilmington, NC) - Savio Nazareth emerged as the winner of the 2016 Carolinas PGA Section Professional Championship held at Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, NC. Early during the morning of the third and final round, play was suspended due to dangerous weather.  Unfortunately, the tournament was unable to resume play despite a valiant effort by CC of Landfall's maintenance staff.  The remnants of Tropical Storm Julia threw multiple cells of rain and lightning at the coastal town of Wilmington throughout the day.  Teeing grounds, fairways, bunkers, and putting greens were under mass amounts of water.  It was eventually determined that if it did stop raining, the course would require too much maintenance to allow for even a reduced nine-hole stipulated round.  As a result, the final round was canceled, and the championship was based on 36 holes.  However, the Committee held a number of competitors behind to hopefully conduct a few playoffs later. After two rounds, Nazareth, a PGA Assistant Professional at Starmount Forest CC in Greensboro, NC, and PGA Teaching Professional James Stewart of Old North State Club in New London, NC, shared the lead at 141 (-3).  A window in the weather system was found, and some course preparation allowed the championship to be finished using the 432-yard 13th hole.  Stewart got in trouble off the tee, finding a large area of casual water.  After taking relief, he hit his approach short right of the green guarded by a tall oak tree on the left.  Nazareth, who was positioned on the right side of the fairway, then threw his shot to approximately 18 feet past the flag.  Stewart's pitch came up 20 feet short.  Still being away, he narrowly missed his par putt, leaving the door open for Nazareth, who calmly two-putted for the victory. The importance of this win was obvious when Nazareth immediately broke into tears as Stewart congratulated his fellow competitor.  Not only did Nazareth earn the title of "Carolinas PGA Professional Champion," the first place prize of $10,000, a beautiful crystal, and a framed championship flag, he also earned an exemption into either the PGA Tour's 2017 Wells Fargo Championship or Wyndham Championship.  The choice would normally be his.  However, with this win, he wrapped up the 2016 Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA.  That honor gives him the second tour appearance. These will be Nazareth's fourth and fifth PGA Tour events. In 2008, 2011, and 2012 he open qualified for the Wyndham and competed in front of his hometown fans.       View More...

To say the least, I was truly overwhelmed and honored,” shares Ron Schmid, PGA. “After taking some time to contemplate the enormity of this prestigious award, I find it hard to imagine that my name will now be associated with the likes of Donald Ross, Henry Poe and Mike Harmon, just to name a few. 92nd Carolinas Open Champion

Greensboro, NC – Drew Younts of Stokesdale, NC captured the 92nd Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center by way of a playoff over Thomas Lilly of Newton, NC. Younts, a PGA Apprentice Teaching Professional at Precision Golf School, entered the third and final round with a three stroke lead after two flawless rounds of 68-67 (-9).  The pressure of the final round seemed to change his situation as Younts' game went hot and cold.  He carded five birdies, seven pars, and five bogies en route to a 35-38=73 (+1) for a total of 208 (-8).   Lilly, a college amateur at UNC Wilmington, opened the tournament with a 74, but closed with rounds of 67-67 to also finish at 208 (-8). The duo headed to the 18th hole, a straightaway par-4 with small segmented portions to its green surrounded by hills on all sides providing natural spectator viewing.  Younts and Lilly traded matching pars the first two times through.  Once, Younts almost birdied with a chip shot, but the flagstick rejected his effort.  On the third hole, both competitors hit wild tee shots - Younts to the right and Lilly to the left.  Younts was able to advance his ball to the front left greenside bunker, but Lilly caught a tree with his approach and then hit his wedge to 30 feet.  After carefully examining his shot, Younts nearly holed his 60-foot bunker shot, leaving it two feet away.  As Lilly's par attempt rolled to the hole, the crowd could tell it was going to be close.  However, the line and speed were just off as the ball finished three inches away.  Younts rolled in the winning putt and gave an enthusiastic fist pump to signal his satisfaction with the victory. Of the 147 golfers who competed, 66 survived the 36-hole cut at +6. The 92nd Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T is an official Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA points event.  Additionally, PGA Professionals' scores count toward the CPGA Johnny Palmer Trophy Presented by True Temper.           View More...
